American Songbook  |  Cedar Hill

Armed with a banjo, guitar and bass – musical group Cedar Hill will pick and sing their way through important periods in American history, from the Civil War and Westward Expansion to the Golden Age of Trains. The group will introduce students to a variety of musical styles, including folk, traditional, gospel, bluegrass, cowboy and patriotic, all while illustrating the program’s theme – “Songs help people get through tough times.” Through humor, sing-a-longs and fun surprises, the group even relates the theme to the students’ lives by writing a song during the program about tackling tough school subjects.

Intended Outcome:
  • Students will learn about important social and political movements in our nation’s history.

Georgia Performance Standards:

  • SS3H1 - The student will explain the political roots of our modern democracy in the USA.

Cedar Hill

Voted “Favorite Bluegrass Act” by Country Atlanta in 2006, Cedar Hill’s versatility and entertaining style keeps audiences engaged and wondering what is coming next. One minute they are picking a foot-stomping version of “Dueling Banjos” from the movie Deliverance, and the next moment they are singing a capella to the tune of the “Hallelujah Chorus.”

Cedar Hill’s music and stage antics have earned the group repeated performances with President Jimmy Carter, the Spivey Hall series of children’s educational concerts at Clayton State University, and the National 4-H Convention for which Cedar Hill has performed for the past ten consecutive years.

Cedar Hill has been featured on both local and national radio and television programs including the Public Broadcasting System’s  State of the Arts.

Cedar Hill is Jim Adkins on banjo and vocals, Bob MacIsaac on guitar and vocals, and Jerry Zee on bass guitar and vocals
