Free At Last: Now Let Me Fly  |  Chetter Galloway

Stories, songs, spoken word and dramatization of historical events produce a memorable picture of the slave experience during the Civil War and Reconstruction. In this moving program, students will gain an appreciation of the courage and ingenuity of enslaved Africans who devised ‘coded songs’ to prevent their masters from discovering their escape plans. They preserved their beliefs and culture (risking certain punishment if caught) by worshipping in ‘hush harbors’—fields, swamps and wooded areas. This program is a tribute to their brave struggle for freedom, equality and human dignity.
