Mask Theatre Residency  |  Sandra Hughes

Masks have been used in nearly every culture to instruct, entertain and celebrate community life. Students create characters and bring them to life with physical techniques from mime, dance and mask theatre traditions. Original or existing plays and stories are presented using masks, movement and music. Students may also design and create papier-mâché masks as part of the residency activities.

Sandra Hughes

Playwright, director, performer and choreographer Sandra Hughes, is known for creating magical, theatrical worlds. Hughes' artistic vision is fed by investigations into history, literature, and visual arts and world cultures, as well as physical engagement in the process of creating and combining theatre, mime and dance. Since her first production in 1975, she has developed an approach that allows her to apply her own unique movement vocabulary to a variety of situations and environments. She is the Founding Artistic Director of Gateway Performance Productions, the company in residence at The MASK Center in Atlanta, Georgia. The Sandra L. Hughes Theatre Collection documenting her professional theatre career as playwright, director, performer and choreographer is housed at the Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee Theatre Research Institute at Ohio State University.
