This program connects students to the essential elements of 3-D art and representation. Various forms of sculpture, materials and methods will be discussed. During this residency Roelna walks students through drawing two-dimensional self portraits. The students then create a three-dimensional self portrait based on their drawings. On completion the ceramic self portraits can be assembled into a permanent or semi -permanent community installation. This could be a perfect gift from parting 5th graders.
Roelna Bashew, a professional visual artist, was born and raised in South Africa where her career evolved from teacher to children’s TV writer and director. During the early 1990s, she relocated to America, bought a few bags of clay and began creating magic (telling stories in 3-D). Roelna now has her own studio –“roelna” – where she continues to create delightful sculptures in bronze and ceramics.
