As our first A4L Lessons school for the 2010—2011 school year, Sawyer Road Elementary School in Marietta, GA, has agreed to let us follow their journey as they partner with us to improve literacy skills for Georgia students. On Friday, September 24, 2010, teachers from Sawyer Road took their first steps to implement A4L Lessons in three classrooms—one each in third, fourth, and fifth grades. Deepali Patel, Beverly Clement, Susan Grigg, and Jill Baker participated in a day of professional learning lead by Barbara O’Brien, Program Director of YAWAC’s A4L Lessons program. They will be delivering A4L Lessons as an extended-day program from October 11 through December 16.
“We are extremely excited to launch our 2010—2011 Arts for Learning Lessons program with Sawyer Road Elementary. We really appreciate the energy and enthusiasm that both Principal Jill Sims and the participating teachers have brought to this partnership.” ~Barbara O'Brien, Arts for Learning Lessons Program Director
Sawyer Road Elementary is an International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) World School and member of Marietta City Schools, one of Georgia’s first charter school systems.

" I work with at-risk and struggling readers, so I was immediately drawn to the Arts for Learning program as a muli-sensory approach to literacy development. I hope to see my students make connections and use creative energy to improve their skills. It may well be a jumping off point for all of us!" |

" My hope for our students is that they will be motivated and encouraged to love literacy and the arts. I foresee this program changing students’ outlook on learning and blazing a new path of instruction." |

"I remember working with Young Audiences twenty years ago when I was the activity director for Open Gate, Cobb County’s abuse shelter for kids from infancy to seventeen. Young Audiences provided several performances and tickets to our kids providing kids who were going through the roughest of times with a glimmer of light from the outside world. I am thrilled to be working with YA again. I am excited to extend the Arts experience to our students who academically struggle. I believe their Arts for Learning Lessons experience will help them grow not only academically, but also in the confidence they need to succeed." |

"My hope is the kids walk away from this program having connected with their creative side. I also hope to see how students connect the arts with literacy, that they will connect the arts with their learning." |
