YAWAC PLU FAQ

Teachers participating in literacy suite programs, smART stART, Arts for Learning Lessons, and Digital Storytelling, can now receive PLU credits.

Any professional serving in the public schools must hold a valid certificate appropriate to the field of employment.

Certificate renewal is an outcome of applying PSC-accepted (Public Service Commission) continuing professional learning activities toward the continued validity of a state certificate.

While it is essential for individual educators to maintain valid certificates, the activities of professional learning should be focused toward school improvement leading to increased student learning.

The goal of certificate renewal and professional learning is for educators within a school system to work together to enhance established educational goals for the individual educator, the school, and the district to assist students in meeting state standards for student achievement.

One of the ways credit may be obtained for certificate renewal is through Professional Learning Units (PLUs) reflected on official transcripts from school systems, colleges, or other state agencies approved by the Georgia Department of Education.

A PLU is a unit of credit based on 10 contact house of formal instruction or its equivalent and on verification that the intent of the formal instruction has been implemented on the job.

Young Audiences, Woodruff Arts Center applied to the Georgia Department of Education to offer PLUs, and the vendor application was approved in early November 2010. Each of the three literacy suite programs, smART stART, A4L Lessons, and Digital Storytelling then had to be submitted and reviewed. The Professional Learning Services Office of the Georgia Department of Education approved each program for 1 PLU, and the programs are now listed on the GADOE Professional Learning website.

Each individual employed by a public or private school or school system in Georgia desiring Professional Learning Unit credits must complete a Prior Approval Form. The form is available on the Young Audiences, Woodruff Arts website. The completed form must be signed by the local superintendent, professional learning coordinator, headmaster, or other person authorized to assure that the improvement goals of the public or private school employing the participant are being met by the course(s) offered by Young Audiences, Woodruff Arts Center.

Participants must meet the following requirements in order to successfully complete the
instructional phase of each PLU course or activity.

1. Attend a minimum of 10 clock hours of instruction for each PLU as verified by
attendance records maintained by the instructors. No more than 10% of the total
contact hours will be allowed as absences. Make-up work will be scheduled for
those with excused absences. All requirements of the instructional phase must be
met within two months of the program date, or the final make-up session, if
required.

2. Demonstrate predetermined levels of competency as evidenced by mastery
verification for each program.

3. Develop an individual plan for implementation that has been approved by the
instructional staff.

A Course Completion Form is available here. Signatures of the instructional staff indicate attendance and successful completion of the mastery verification requirements.
