Cartoons are not just “kid stuff.” In Mr. Ollie’s hands, they’re actually a vehicle for developing strong writing skills. Using his own gag (joke) cartoons as examples, Tim shows students how to turn their personal experiences into the subject of a single panel cartoon. The process of defining their subject’s characteristics forces them to observe small details and express them verbally in clear, cogent, descriptive writing. Over the course of several days, students will create a rough draft and several revised and edited “clean-up” versions of their cartoons before finishing them in pencil and crayons (younger students) or in pastels, ink and pastel chalks or crayons (older students).
