In Kuchipudi dance, stories from traditional Indian mythology are communicated through hand gestures, foot movements and rhythmic syllables. Exotic and beautiful, these dances convey a rich culture and history and offer a captivating way for students to understand the essential elements of stories. Once students master the gestures, they will combine them with speech, song, mime and movement to tell a story. The techniques of Kuchipudi can be applied to stories of all types, from all cultures—a useful and effective technique for building literacy.
