Seven Continents; Seven Stories  |  Mama Koku

Embark on a trip from continent to continent through traditional folktales! Every culture has stories that share a little of their language, traditions, and values. Since Koku fancies herself to be somewhat of a quick change artist, you can also experience some of their fashion! World travel is always first class when you’re flying with stories on the wings of Mama Koku!

Mama Koku

Mama Koku, (Donna “Kokumo” Buie), is a Master Storyteller. Her gifts lie in combining storytelling, theatre and class-room subject matter into interactive performances that are fun and educational. Koku has taught Drama to children of all age levels from elementary to high school. Before becoming a full time storyteller, KoKu spent 7 years teaching Pre-K.

Koku graduated with honors from North Carolina Central University, majoring in Dramatic Arts with concentrations in performance and education. During her studies, she received awards from both the Education and Drama departments for outstanding achievement in scholarship, performance and service.

She has been storytelling professionally for 13 years, (7 years full time.) Koku is the official Teller for the National Black Arts Festival’s Children’s Educational Village, their Village to Go, and NBAF’s Coretta Scott King Book Fair. Mama Koku is also on the roster as a “Rambler”, for The Wren’s Nest,(Joel Chandler Harris House Museum), and the PeachSeed Youth Storytelling Festivals.

Other featured performances include The Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site, The National Association of Black Storytellers Festival’s Adopt-A-Teller Program (New Orleans), Minneapolis’ Signifyin’ & Testifyin’ Storytelling Festival, Jacksonville Florida’s Griot Festival and Kingsley Plantation, Rhode Islands’ Funda Fest, Grant Park’s Summer Shade Festival, Decatur Children’s Festival, Atlanta History Center, Callanwolde Fine Arts Center, The High Museum of Art, Zoo Atlanta , The Apex Museum, & many other church, school & festival venues throughout GA and the southeast.
