Performing for Understanding

Designing Assembly Programs for Engagement and Student Outcomes

Performing for Understanding is a five-day professional learning seminar for assembly performance artists developed by Young Audiences, Woodruff Arts Center with support from the Goizueta Foundation. The number of participants is limited to fifteen artists. Interested artists may apply as individuals or as an ensemble leader accompanied by one ensemble member.

Seminar Rationale and Principles

Performing for Understanding represents a new phase in the evolution of assembly performance programs throughout the Young Audiences network. Over the course of five sessions, artists will explore the components of effective assembly programs (based on the Young Audiences Standards of Quality) as they apply to their own work. Artists will learn to create programs that encompass these essential criteria:

• Presents student-centered activities;

• Delivers measurable outcomes;

• Offers authentic examples of the art form;

• Connects understandings of those art form elements to the creative process and other student learning.

Participants will be expected to write program outlines and scripts and to deliver a 20-minute program segment to a live audience. Artists will receive feedback from students, teachers and peers to help them further refine their work.
